SOULVILLE, SA! brings together three remarkable South Australian musicians from different generations for a night built around one of the great sounds in jazz – the Hammond organ combo featuring Dave McEvoy and, on Drums, recently returned from Montreux Jazz Festival, Alex Flood.
At the microphone is Naomi Eyers, a powerhouse soul, jazz, and R&B vocalist whose career has taken her from Australian stages to the Edinburgh Fringe, and who has been a regular for many years at Ronnie Scott’s in London, London’s West End, and television screens around the world. Naomi created the much-loved cabaret group The Fabulous Singlettes in 1986, earning Pick of the Fringe in Edinburgh and later being shortlisted for an Olivier Award during their West End run.
Joining her is saxophonist Dustan ‘Dusty’ Cox, one of South Australia’s most experienced jazz musicians, whose career includes a 1995 Grammy Award nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for a live big band recording.
On guitar is Tyler Venter, representing an exciting new generation of South Australian jazz musicians and a former DownBeat Student Music Award winner. Tyler and Dusty already share a love of the classic Hammond sound through their group Organatomy – and for SOULVILLE, SA!, they’re turning the dial firmly towards soul.
Expect music drawing on the worlds of Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Etta James, Jimmy Smith and more, reimagined through a band loaded with Hammond organ, tenor sax, guitar, drums and one hell of a voice.
