Songs of the Astral Plane is a curated musical gathering of five LA-based solo singer-songwriters whose stories and voices will transport you into the spirit realm with dreamy desert highway alt-country, airy harmonies and soft Southern twang.
PERFORMERS:
Miranda Lee Richards:
LA-based, San Francisco-bred singer-songwriter Miranda Lee Richards’ full-length albums (Virgin Records, Nettwerk Records, Invisible Hands Music) were released to critical acclaim by Mojo, Rolling Stone, Americana UK, Stereogum, and Interview Magazine. She has performed alongside The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and The Dandy Warhols, appearing in the cult classic rock documentary “DIG!”. Her velvet-laced voice blends Mazzy Star-esque alt-country, traditional folk, rock, and pop into lilting melodies that remain in your head long afterwards. In addition to working on her own new album, Miranda is collaborating on projects with the Lords of Thyme as well as a three-part harmony group called MIROMA, with Maesa and Rosa Pullman.

Sara Melson:
LA-based, Indiana and Boston raised Sara Melson's alternately dreamy and delicate, raspy and ringing folk-pop merges the ethereal rawness of Cat Power and the directness and strength of Carole King, with timeless, melodic songs that aim to heal and uplift. She has been featured in Huffington Post, Magnet, PopMatters, American Songwriter, Variety, LAWeekly, BuzzbandsLA, on iHeartRadio, KCSN, KCRW, and in Grey’s Anatomy. Sara has shared the stage with Neil Halstead (Slowdive /Mojave 3), Jill Sobule, Ben Folds, Juliana Hatfield, and Lissie, and performed for Sweet Relief’s benefit concert for victims of the LA fires along with Moby, Jim James, Dawes, Noa Cyrus, and Flea. Sara received a Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs artist commission and is a volunteer with Art of Elysium, bringing music to seniors and at-risk youth. She is currently at work on a new indie-folk album, Elixir.

James Henry Jr.:
James Henry Jr. is the solo venture of singer-songwriter Pete Harper, a Chicago native, who is also one-half of the duo Motor Sales. Harper has a long resumé as a songwriter/collaborator with the likes of Madison Cunningham, Elliphant, Sammy Brue, Courtney Marie Andrews and Sara Bareilles, but his new project draws on the deep well of life experiences. His new alter ego, in fact, is the name of his grandfather. “He was a truck driver and a searcher,” Harper says. Harper’s pristine, yearning vocals are heart-piercing.
Additionally, along with esteemed folk singer-songwriter Sean Watkins, Harper hosts the “Before Your Very Ears” podcast, in which the two co-write a song on-air from start to finish in real time with seminal musical guests.
