Songs That Move: the concept

Founded in 2019 by Bibi Heal, the Song Surgery project developed the concept of ‘prescribing’ songs to connect with people & offer support – an uplifting song if they felt low, a calming song if they felt anxious. The idea is to use the transforming power of music with poetry to create little films in your imagination.

Aphasia

Aphasia is a language disability that can affect talking, understanding, reading & writing – it does not affect intelligence. There are 350,000 people in the UK living with aphasia. Around one third of people who have a stroke will have aphasia.

The research project

We worked with 8 people living with aphasia after a stroke. We asked them what they wanted from the Songs That Move project.

Aphasia ReConnect

This concert is raising money for Aphasia Re-Connect, a registered charity that enables peer support, bringing people with aphasia together.

We are grateful to City, University of London for funding this project. This project is a collaboration between Bibi Heal (founder of Song Surgery), City, University of London (Dr Sarah Northcott, Dr Abi Roper, Dr Sally McVicker), King’s College London (Dr Tony Woods) and Central Michigan University (Dr Katie Strong).
