Solo Jazz Supplement: Review!

Join us as we learn to dance solo jazz!

The Solo Jazz Supplement is an independently facilitated practice session intended to help vernacular swing dancers improve solo jazz vocabulary and technique by learning classic and modern solo jazz routines in a fun, informal setting.

Sep through Dec: Review!
Instead of learning a new routine we'll review and/or work through:
Shim Sham
STL Shim Sham
Doin' the Jive
Mama's Stew
Al & Leon Shim Sham
Tranky Doo
Let us know which one you want to work on!

When: one Monday per month, 6:30-8:30pm
Where: American Czech Club, Dayton, OH
Who: Kyle Girtz (let me know if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions)
How much: suggested $5, venmo @KyleGirtz (preferred) or cash
https://venmo.com/code?user_id=2204700791275520906&created=1772650471
This is a pay-what-you-can event. The suggested $5 covers venue costs. You are welcome to pay more if you're loving it, or less if $5 is a stretch. I don't want money to be the reason someone doesn't attend.

Format:
We'll stick to the outline below, but this is an informal event. You are welcome to come and go, skip parts, or step off to the side and work on something individually at any time.
6:30-7:00pm Unstructured practice time
Review other routines, show up late, warm up, it's up to you! We'll also isolate key moves from the night's routine so beginners can ease in.
7:00-8:15pm Facilitated learning session/class
We learn a solo routine! Generally this will feel like a class, sometimes more like a guided practice session depending on the routine. I hope to learn new routines too so we may occasionally get outside input or just watch YouTube together! Choreography will be the priority, although we will venture into alternate stylings, options, and technique as time and skill allow.
8:15-8:30pm Song Reps
The cardio portion of the night! Run the entire routine 2-3 times at full speed with rest breaks.

Background:
Classic solo routines like the Shim Sham, Tranky Doo, and Big Apple were created by the original swing dancers as a "line dance" version of social swing dancing that everyone can participate in without a partner. The global swing scene has kept these routines alive and created many more!
The Solo Jazz Supplement is intended to provide dancers from any scene an opportunity to learn many of these routines in a group setting. Besides being able to participate when these routines are performed at a dance, learning solo jazz can make you a better partner dancer as well. You'll improve body control, posture, pulse, rhythm, and style as well as pick up vocabulary to integrate into partner dancing. If your Lindy Hop feels vanilla, solo jazz is a great way to add variety and flair!
Online resources abound and it's possible to learn these routines at home by yourself, but experience has shown that time and motivation are tough to find. Learning as a group is more fun and keeps everyone focused. As we learn routines we'll be able to perform them at local and bigger dances. We may even try to coordinate some flash mobs or create some videos at some point!
