The Kota Alliance is proud to present a solo women's art exhibit 'SECOND LIFE' by Wilhelmina "Obatola" Grant-Cooper. The exhibition explores renewal, resilience, and transformation through reclaimed and discarded materials. It features the work of the Harlem-based artist, author, and two-time breast cancer survivor.
What does it mean to give something a second life?
For Grant-Cooper, it is found in rescuing landfill-bound objects—such as rusted metal, forgotten items, and everyday castoffs—and reassembling them into expressive sculptures. Presented during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, her work carries a deeply personal meaning, reflecting her own journey of healing, survival, and the discovery that endings can become new beginnings.
SECOND LIFE is one of our Fall programming events, dedicated to heritage, storytelling, and sustainability. We invite you to join us for an evening of art, connection, and reflection as we celebrate the transformative power of creativity, care, and hope.

About the organizers
The Kota Alliance is a women centered community-based hub with a mission to create equity and empower marginalized women and girls through Arts & Culture and Advocacy, championing gender equity and holistic wellness.
Wilhelmina "Obatola" Grant-Cooper is a self-taught mixed-media artist, arts educator, author, and founder of SISTAAH (Survivors Inspiring Sisters Through Art and Advocacy for Health). Since 2008, she has transformed discarded objects into art that reveals beauty, resilience, and possibility.
