SOCIAL SATURDAY AT TSC
Community + Creating Come Together
Día de Muertos: Nichos + Marigolds
Saturday, October 31 | 10 AM–2 PM
$10 per person | All ages welcome
In collaboration with Sheboygan with Kids
This October, Social Saturday is a celebration of Día de Muertos—a day to gather, create, remember + celebrate the people we love.
We’ll be making nichos, small decorated boxes found in Mexican folk art that can be used to honor and remember someone meaningful to us. Fill yours with color, flowers, decorative details, and a photograph of someone you’d like to remember.
Please bring a 3×5 or smaller photograph or printed copy of a photo of a loved one who has passed away to include in your nicho. We’ll provide the rest of the materials.
And while everyone creates something of their own, we’ll also make something together.
Throughout the day, we’ll be building a large community marigold arch, with each guest invited to create tissue-paper cempasúchil and add their flowers to the installation.
Marigolds are an important part of Día de Muertos celebrations. Their brilliant orange and yellow color and distinctive fragrance are traditionally used on ofrendas and along pathways to help welcome and guide the spirits of loved ones. Arches are also used as part of ofrendas, creating a symbolic passage and welcome for those being remembered.
Our arch will grow throughout Social Saturday—many individual flowers, made by many different hands, becoming one community piece.
Come for the full four hours or stop in for a while. Kids, teens, + adults are all invited to create alongside one another.
No art skills needed. Whether Día de Muertos is part of your traditions or you’re learning about it for the first time, everyone is welcome. Come make something, learn a little, and celebrate with us!
