What a Sober Group Is ForBuilding community: Connects you with peers who share similar experiences, reducing feelings of isolation and shame.
Preventing relapse: Teaches practical strategies to handle cravings and navigate high-risk situations.
Providing accountability: Encourages regular attendance and mutual support to keep you focused on your long-term goals.
What You Do in a Sober Group
Share experiences: Talk openly about daily struggles, victories, and personal milestones in a non-judgmental environment.
Identify triggers: Map out specific people, places, emotions, or events that spark the urge to use.
Learn coping skills: Practice stress management, mindfulness, and alternative ways to handle tough emotions. You can explore common addiction recovery group activities to see typical exercises like self-affirmation and resilience building.
Meeting Structure & Flow
The opening: The meeting leader or facilitator will start on time, usually by reading the group's mission statement, guidelines, or a short reflection.
Introductions: The leader will ask if there are any newcomers or people attending the group for the first time. You only need to share your first name if you want to.
The main discussion: The group will transition into the core format, which typically follows one of two styles:
Speaker meeting: One person shares their personal recovery journey for the majority of the time.
Topic discussion: The leader picks a specific theme (like handling stress or rebuilding trust) and opens the floor for anyone to share.
The closing: Meetings usually wrap up with a standard closing phrase, a brief moment of silence, or a group sign-off.
Group Expectations & Rules
No requirement to speak: You are never forced to share your story. If it is your turn and you aren't ready, you can simply say, "I'm just listening today," and the group will move to the next person.
Strict confidentiality: What is said in the room stays in the room. Members respect your privacy entirely.
No "cross-talk": When one person is speaking, everyone else listens quietly. Group members do not interrupt, give unsolicited advice, or argue with what someone else is saying.
