Roseburg Public Library and the City of Roseburg’s Community Development Department welcome the public to “The Art of Historic Preservation” from Smithsonian Associates at 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 10.Historic preservation is often thought of as the stewardship of grand landmarks associated with great figures such as Thomas Jefferson, as well as places of worship, courthouses and monuments. But the modest houses, working landscapes and overlooked spaces that hold our personal and collective memories also matter.
Public historian Ken Turino traces the history of the preservation movement in America, including the foundational work of William Sumner Appleton and the often-overlooked role of women. He explores how the field has evolved to have a more inclusive vision of what deserves protection, including diners, workers’ housing and Main Street storefronts. Turino also delves into why we save some places and let others go, as well as how much change a historic building can endure while remaining itself.
Following the presentation, Community Development Department staff will discuss the community’s historic districts, how the City approaches historic preservation and the role of the Historic Resource Review Commission.
The free event is available in person only at the library, 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd.
