Joseph McGill, Jr. is the founder and executive director of the Slave Dwelling Project, based in Charleston, South Carolina. Through overnight stays in historic slave dwellings, McGill brings attention to these often-overlooked structures and their importance to understanding American history. He has conducted more than 250 overnight stays at approximately 150 sites in 25 states and the District of Columbia, engaging descendants, students, educators, historical organizations, and communities in conversations about slavery and its legacy.McGill has worked with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Penn Center, the African American Museum of Iowa, and the National Park Service. McGill is a public historian, living history interpreter, and coauthor of Sleeping with the Ancestors: How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery.
