S.K.A.M.: war, memory and the stories we well: a literary conversation with Ukrainian writer and playwright Alina Sarnatska29 November 2026 | 14:00–16:00. Doors open 14:00, start of the discussion 14:15.
Estonian House, Wallingatan 34, Stockholm
How can literature capture the reality of war, preserve memory and tell stories that might otherwise remain unheard?
Join us for an afternoon with Ukrainian writer and playwright Alina Sarnatska, whose work explores the human experience of war, trauma, memory and resilience.
The conversation will focus on her novel S.K.A.M. (2026), inspired by experiences and events from 2022–2024. Through literature, Alina explores the realities of life during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the ways people navigate an extraordinary reality in their everyday lives.
The discussion will be moderated by Sofia Nyblom, journalist and cultural commentator. It will be followed by a reading from the novel and an opportunity for questions from the audience.
As the event coincides with Holodomor Remembrance Day weekend, we will also briefly discuss Alina’s play Zhyr (2025), which explores the links between eating disorders and the historical trauma of the Holodomor. Recently translated into Swedish by Mikael Nydahl, the play premieres in Kyiv on the same day.
You will have the opportunity to purchase Alina’s book S.K.A.M. (in Ukrainian) at the event. A fundraising auction will also take place, with all proceeds going to the Leleka Foundation, supporting Ukraine.
The event will be held in English.
Free admission, but prior registration is required. Please register via https://forms.gle/AoFqXubuLJiypndz7
