The two-hour concert presents a vibrant showcase of traditional dances and live music performed by SAMAHAN’s talented artists in colorful traditional and indigenous Filipino attire. Three suites highlight the cultural dances and rituals of the Maranao of Mindanao, the Sama and Tausug of the Sulu Archipelago, and the Kalingas of the Cordilleras in Northern Luzon. These performances are accompanied by the rhythmic beats of bossed gongs called kulintang, bamboo instruments known as gabang, and flat gongs called gangsa, with the renowned SAMAHAN Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble providing the percussion.
Also featured are European- and Western-influenced dances, like the elegant Maria Clara dances and the lively rural dances from the central countryside of the Philippines. These are brought to life with live music from the SAMAHAN Rondalla String Ensemble. The dynamic performances and spirited music from both the Rondalla and Kulintang ensembles promise a fun and memorable evening.
Through the concert of Philippine dances and music, SAMAHAN Arts shares the beauty of Filipino folk traditions. From rituals and courtship to festive celebrations, these dances and songs capture the richness of Filipino culture, customs, and heritage. Their variety reflects the country’s deep connections with Asian and Western influences throughout history, from Indian, Chinese, Indochinese, Indonesian, and Malay to Spanish and American.
