are a celebrated rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland, with roots in the city’s vibrant 1980s punk and post-punk scene. Formed in 1982, they quickly built a reputation for melodic yet powerful songwriting, leading to major releases and international touring. The band were signed to EMI Records, and later Atlantic Records, releasing a series of well-received albums throughout the 1980s.
During their original run, Silent Running supported a number of major international acts including Simple Minds, Robert Palmer, The Alarm, Talk Talk, and Stevie Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.
After reforming in 2019, the band have enjoyed renewed success with live shows and acclaimed new recordings, including the albums Follow the Light and current album .
In recent years Silent Running have brought their dynamic live sound to large audiences across Belfast and beyond. Highlights include supporting Simple Minds at Custom House Square in 2022, performing at Belsonic in Ormeau Park in 2025 alongside Madness and Ocean Colour Scene, and supporting Texas at Custom House Square later that same summer.
Their live sets draw from their full catalogue — from early albums Shades of Liberty, Walk on Fire and Deep to later releases such as Follow the Light and NORTHSTAR — blending classic favourites with newer material.
