In honor of its 100th anniversary, xkl’s latest project is creating a score for F.W. Murnau’s astounding “Faust.” The story is classic—the testing of man’s soul in the face of tragedy. But Murnau’s powerful, haunting visuals were ahead of its time. The fact that this film was made in 1926 is difficult to comprehend, and xkl is thrilled to be bringing this German masterpiece to audiences in autumn, 2026. “From the standpoint of taste and photographic brilliance it Is doubtful whether there has ever been a production that surpassed it.” – Variety Event Details

ten thousand lakes (xkl) are Peter Bruhn (percussive and electronic instruments and noises), and Steven Larsen (stringed and electronic instruments and noises).
Their influences are numerous, and not limited to music alone. Visual art, film, dance, poetry, and literature all inform their approach to creativity, as do formative years performing in a European-based shoegaze band and an indie-rock band in the upper Midwest. In 2021, they founded “the bakery” as their creative space for musical exploration and recording. What has resulted is lorem ipsum, a collection of musical pieces inspired by these ingredients.
The live component of xkl features accompanying avant-garde and experimental films from the first half of the 20th century, which in some cases inspired the compositions on lorem ipsum.
In autumn 2025 they created original scores to four short films by the Ukrainian-born filmmaker Maya Deren. Peter and Steven were grateful that the Maya Deren Estate granted permission for them to perform these scores in numerous theaters throughout the Midwest and beyond. Highlights of the project include four sold-out performances in Minneapolis and performing at the Oak Cliff Film Festival in Dallas, Texas.
