15th Anniversary Screening!
Tuesday 17th November - 8:30pm Start
The Showroom Cinema Main Bar, Paternoster Row, Sheffield S1 2BX
On 17th November we will celebrate the event's 15th anniversary and we have a very special night planned indeed!
Our featured film of the evening will be 'Pleyada of Lesya Ukrainka' by Director Mariia Khomutina and Producer Bozhena Tretiakova. They will be joining us and coming here all the way from the Ukraine and will be our special guests! Actresses from the film Eva Nedilchenko, Viktoriia Mateiko and Ivanna Yakovenko will also be joining us!
We will also be arranging a special reception and networking event for them before the screening - and all SYFN members and invited guests will be welcome! This is a very special evening for our humble little monthly short film event - we hope you are as excited as we are!
We will also be screening some of the 'Best of' the promotional films made for SYFN's 2026 2Weeks2Make It Competition. Check out the specifics below but we are very excited to be screening some of the strongest of the films made for the 2026 event - and the filmmakers will be onhand to talk about their films too.
Eleven films in total will be screening at this amazing event - and it's all for free! You can be a part of it - just come on down to the Showroom Cinema Main Bar on the night. One bit of advice: this is apt to be a busy one, so best reserve a table in advance by calling the Showroom's Main Bar if you want to come on down!
We will ALSO be raffling off some prizes on the night, donated by the Showroom Cinema and supporters!
Want to be a part of it? Want to do some networking with the filmmakers attending on the evening? Want some FREE CAKE to celebrate our anniversary? Want to be in with a chance to win a prize in our raffle? Of course you do! Don't miss this one folks - we will be back in 2027 but this is going to be a heck of a way to wrap up Showroom Shorts 2026!
Here's the full programme for the night:
Pleyada of Lesya Ukrainka - Dir. Mariia Khomutina, 2026 - 17.14
Kyiv, 1891. Young poet Lesya Ukrainka forms a secret literary circle to defend the Ukrainian language from the Russian Empire's repression, risking everything in a struggle for identity, culture, and freedom. Produced by Bozhena Tretiakova.
The Best of 2Weeks2Make It 2026
An encore screening of some of the winning and best videos made via SYFN's own 2Weeks2Make It competition in 2026. Student filmmakers from across Yorkshire were given the challenge to make a promo video for an independent business based near their place of study. Tonight, we showcase some of the winners and best film produced! Expect films made for a barber's, tennis club, a games development company and even a sock shop! 2Weeks 2Make It is delivered in collaboration with Screen Yorkshire, the Connected Campus Initiative and Screen Alliance North, with support of the BFI awarding National Lottery funding.
Screening are promos by and for:
Savils Barbers - Dir. Mitchell Abercrombie from Sheffield Hallam University - 2.09
St. Andrews' Tennis Club - Dirs. Josh Broughton and Jack Copley from Sheffield Hallam University - 1.09
Gritstone Games - Dir. Jack Kelly of Konky Media from Sheffield Hallam University - 1.52
Socktopus - Dir. Jonathan Rios Aparicio and team from the University of York - 1.38
Ritual - Dir. Jemma Rosenthal, 2026 - 3.48
In this quiet, experimental film inspired by Maya Deren, a solitary woman drifts through the sunlit rooms of a house. As she reads at a table, looks through an open window, and moves slowly between the garden and the house, these ordinary moments begin to blur together, as though she is caught somewhere between reality and memory.
A Cavendish Discovery of Witchcraft - Dir. Brenda Malley, 2026 - 14:09
Margaret Cavendish, who lived during the 17th century, became the first woman to publish large amounts of poetry, fiction, drama, and philosophical/religious writing in English - all under her own name. In the face of stereotypes for women, she was a rational thinker and an intellectual. In this brief film, she is confronted by her friend the Reverend Joseph Glanvill, who tries to persuade her of the existence of witches. Comedy ensues when he fears that her waiting lady Elizabeth Topp is a red devil.
Anansi the Spider - Dir. Stephen Givnan, 2025 - 11.51
Performed by an ensemble of Deaf, learning disabled, and neurodivergent adults, this black-and-white silent movement piece reimagines West African folklore through shadow play and ritual imagery. As the trickster Anansi spins his threads of control, the film explores the greed, isolation, and ruin that come with hoarding knowledge.
The Wiseman and the Cook - Dir. Stephen Givnan, 2025 - 15.50
Performed by an all-learning disabled and neurodivergent cast, The Wise Man and the Cook is steeped in a distinctive, 1970s "folk wyrd" aesthetic. When illness strikes a secluded village, the gentle rhythm of the community is shattered by paranoia and pointing fingers. Rather than relying on magic or spectacle, this atmospheric fable explores how a community's rising hysteria is ultimately healed through quiet wisdom, listening, and restraint.
Diolch Mor (Thank You, Sea) - Dir. Steve Buckley, 2026 - 5.30
A community film, by the people of Ceredigion, Wales.
Coffee and Cars - Dir. James Joel Dann, 2026 - 9.18
