Lola Art House (8197 Main St Ste 300, Ellicott City, MD 21043) and rob's Open Mics presents the first of a monthly songwriter showcase series. Four songwriters performing in the round, singing their hearts out at a new micro event space in Old Ellicott City. rob Hinkal of ilyAIMY hosts and brings you the people that are inspiring him, breaking his heart, or just making his world a better place. Kicking off Thursday, November 5th with Acacia Sears, Alberto Abreu and Mosno Al-Moseeki. $5 in advance (tickets coming soon), $10 at the door. About the venue: A friend just opened this space and it's a freshly-blooming dream. Tucked away above and behind EC Pops on Main Street Old Town Ellicott City and overlooking my favourite sushi joint, it's a trick to find the first time, but well-worth the effort. BYOB. I want to get in on the ground floor with this space (though this place is NOT on the ground floor*) because she's got plans to build a bar and provide culinary delights soon! *There are future plans for better accessibility, but at the moment you've gotta be able to do some stairs to attend these shows!
About the artists:
“Acacia Sears is a Baltimore-based singer songwriter whose work is rooted in true life stories, thick with metaphor and imagery, percussive while being poetic." Psh. Acacia Sears is a singer/songwriter that I've known for a very, very long time and over the past **20 years** (?) has been the person who writes catchy, poignant cautionary tales that make me want to make bad decisions. Currently she's working on an album of Love songs for the end of the world. No reason. More at acaciasears.com
Mosno Al-Moseeki: "Mosno Al-Moseeki, a Sudanese singer/songwriter, a gentle blend of East and West. Mixing Arab-Poetic lyrics with a touch of pentatonic acoustic guitar playing." If Mosno isn't able to remind you that there is whimsy to be found in the everyday, it's absolutely possible you have no soul. Simple chords and rhythms wind around a beautiful falsetto vocal delivery, transfixing you while paradoxically making you want to MOVE.
Alberto Abreu: I don't know much about Alberto yet. He came to my open mic at Morsbergers and I Loved his set - very cool, Soundgardeny riffs, powerful vocals and... honestly, he's too pretty to be allowed. And yet, I'm allowing it. Magnificent vocals delivered in two languages and a solid pop musical sensibility make this guy someone I'm gonna book while I can.
rob Hinkal: Catonsville-based singer/songwriter, and open mic host - rob Hinkal is also the co-front of nationally-touring acoustic grunge band, ilyAIMY, Executive Director of FocusMusic, a photographer and A/V engineer, and struggling optimist.
"Percussive, rhythmically driven guitar that freely composites fingerpicking, classical melodies, running bass lines, harmonics, & hard-charging chords. [rob's] vocals are needled & gaunt, with the jittery energy of a dockyard stray on speed ...” – Allzah
