Shoot What You Have: Phone Photography Workshop - Portland

“You don’t need an expensive camera. Bring the phone already in your pocket and spend one afternoon learning to see differently.”

Shoot What You Have is a three-hour hands-on photography workshop built around one simple idea:

Better photographs do not begin with more expensive equipment.

They begin with light, framing, timing, and knowing where to stand.

This workshop is limited to 16 participants and uses only the smartphone you already carry.

No professional camera is required.

No advanced photography experience is required.

And most of the session is spent shooting rather than listening to a presentation.

You will begin inside the studio with a short visual demonstration, head outside in a group of four with a mentor for a guided Pearl District photo walk, then return to select, sequence, and refine the images you made.

The goal is to finish the afternoon with a small set of photographs you understand - not just images you happened to like.

WHAT YOU WILL PRACTICE

The workshop focuses on three practical principles:

LIGHT

Learn to recognize the difference between difficult light and useful light.

Practice changing your position before changing your settings.

COMPOSITION

Use foreground, background, negative space, lines, layers, and framing to make a photograph easier to read.

ANGLE & DISTANCE

See how moving a few feet, lowering the phone, changing distance, or waiting several seconds can create a very different image without changing equipment.

SEE DIFFERENTLY

The workshop begins with a short live demonstration.

The instructor will photograph the same or similar subject in several different ways using a smartphone.

You will see how changes in:

  • light
  • angle
  • distance
  • background
  • framing

can change an image before any complex editing is introduced.

This section is intentionally short.

The majority of the workshop is hands-on.

THE PHOTO WALK

Participants divide into four groups of four.

Each group is accompanied by a mentor for a guided practice walk through the surrounding Pearl District.

The group works through three assignments.

PEOPLE & LIGHT

Practice simple portraits using another willing participant in your group.

You will work on:

  • finding usable natural light
  • choosing a background
  • directing someone without over-posing them
  • changing distance and angle
  • making several versions of the same photograph

No participant is required to be photographed.

ARCHITECTURE & DETAIL

Use the Pearl District environment to practice:

  • lines
  • symmetry
  • texture
  • reflections
  • repetition
  • foreground and background relationships
  • isolating details inside a larger scene

EVERYDAY CONTENT

Create simple lifestyle-style images using ordinary surroundings and available light.

The exercise focuses on producing images that feel intentional without requiring elaborate equipment, sets, or professional lighting.

YOUR 10-SHOT PRACTICE SET

During the photo walk, you will work toward a 10-image practice set.

The objective is not to promise ten perfect photographs.

Instead, each image should demonstrate a decision you can explain:

  • Why did you choose that light?
  • Why did you stand there?
  • Why did you include or remove something from the frame?
  • Why is one version stronger than another?

Understanding those decisions is the core skill of the workshop.

SELECT, SEQUENCE & EDIT

After the photo walk, the group returns to the studio for a 40-minute editing and sequencing session.

You will learn how to narrow a larger camera roll into 5–7 images that work together.

Participants may choose between two exercises:

PHOTO STORY

Arrange 5–7 photographs into a simple visual sequence suitable for a carousel-style post or personal photo story.

15-SECOND VIDEO

Select and assemble short clips into a simple approximately 15-second sequence using basic tools available on your phone.

The workshop does not require professional editing software.

Specific editing features may vary by phone model and operating system.
