Shelter Simulation - (Class 2 of 2)
This class will help bridge the gap between classroom theory and chaotic real-world disaster environments by building speed, teamwork, and confidence.
This is a joint training opportunity for residents and volunteers of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills.
Shelter Fundamentals (Class 1 of 2) is required for Shelter Simulation (Class 2 of 2).
This class is built around the following Core Simulation Objectives:
- Physical Setup: Unloading supply trailers, arranging cots, organizing dormitories, and posting safety signage under tight time constraints.
- Client Intake & Registration: Practicing compassionate communication, registering fictional guests, and managing documentation or mission cards.
- Mass Care Operations: Simulating safe food distribution, health services triage, and addressing mental health or accessibility standards.
- Team Coordination: Refining communication channels and role assignments among local volunteers and community partners.

Info: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Explain sheltering and its principles. Explain differences between evacuation and post-disaster shelters. Describe the organization of a shelter and DRO. Identify types of supervisors. Specify roles and responsibilities. Describe shelter spaces, layout, and supplies needed. Improve ability for effectively managing shelter service workers. Identify effective communication techniques inside the shelter. Explain collecting and reporting information. Describe how to serve individual client needs. Emphasize collaboration with partners.
