"I want my music to be everything for others", SHELTER BOY thought to himself during Covid-19 lockdown, resulting in 10 songs that he put on the record. "Failure Familiar" is weathervane, spinning on the shifting winds of its protagonist’s emotional wellbeing. With a dazzling palette of sound—from the stretched-out rock anthems that Oasis made their name on to Mac DeMarco’s languid guitar-pop and King Krule’s woozy beat-driven songcraft—it’s a striking introduction to an artist using classic ideas to mine modern life’s pitfalls. The result is holistic and gorgeous music, restorative as it is self-reflective. “I’m trying to show another way of being vulnerable, and to let people know that these feelings exist and can relate to it.”
Before Simon “Shelly” Graupner went solo as SHELTER BOY, the East German musician played guitar in the indie rock band Still Trees. Why he chose to go his own way after all: “I thought I might be able to make better music on my own”, he explains. With this bold statement, he went right ahead and realized his dreams.
He released his debut EP "Mirage Morning" in 2019 directly followed by his second EP "Rock'n'Roll saved my Childhood (lel)". Both EPs showcased his intricate songcraft and rich melodic sensibilities, leading to tours with artists like Gus Dapperton and Omar Apollo, as well as a gig with Norwegian pop artist Boy Pablo, who lent his distinct croon to Shelly’s gloriously head-in-the-clouds creation “Terrace”.
When he is not on the road with his band the Shelly Family, he can be seen on his own, accompanied only by his electric guitar. While performing with the full band will result in adventurous performances and musical excursions, the more intimate solo show is also able to convey the same atmosphere of love and youthful frivolousness.
After several summer concerts and festivals SHELTER BOY is heading to the UK in December 2021 as an opener for bilk and already in April and May next year he returns back on stage with his "failure familiar tour 2022". 16 shows through Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and the UK. Bringing along: his Shelly Family, the frivolousness we are all seeking and new songs.
