In the Shambhala tradition, we welcome the full range of sense perceptions, of emotional and mental events, in our life as a profound path towards enlightenment. “Be there all along,” as Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche would say. In the Zen tradition, waking up means stopping our striving, dropping our self-help mind and our search for enlightenment somewhere else. It’s just this, right here, right now. How can everyday life be a sacred and profound source of our enlightenment in one tradition, and a vast non-conceptual emptiness with nothing special about it in another? Is it a profound Shambhala path or just a clever Zen trick? What does it mean when Buddhists say that life is an oxymoron?
Come engage in silent dialogue, experience the depth of beginner’s mind, practice meditation in action, and examine other crazy Buddhist contradictions as we explore connections between Shambhala and Zen that bridge the chaos of everyday life and the silent path of meditation.
