Gender and Violence Network - Book launch and interactive event
Why should those of us who study and tackle sexual violence care about its role in racial capitalism? What good can a political economy analysis do across academic disciplines, and how can it move from theory into practice? To think more about these questions, join us for a launch workshop on Alison Phipps’ new book Sexual Violence in Racial Capitalism. The book asks how sexual violence is key to fundamental capitalist processes: the extraction of productive and socially reproductive labour; the theft of resources and dispossession of communities; and the disposal of unwanted populations. The book also describes how acts of sexual violence work in a pincer movement with ideas about sexual threat.
Sexual Violence in Racial Capitalism brings together assorted case studies including the Early Modern witch hunts, reproductive accumulation in transatlantic slavery, sexual harassment in drop-shipping warehouses and sweatshops, far-right Islamophobia and ‘anti- gender’ activism, the manosphere, and the Gaza genocide. In this launch workshop, scholars and practitioners will be invited to apply its analysis to their own work and ideas, to think about what might be productively and creatively used, and whether there are additional questions that need to be answered. This will be an interactive event with refreshments.
