Sex Addiction
Sex Addiction – The Spaces In Between
Weekly Online Sessions with Dr. Louise Swart
A Safe, Confidential Space to Talk About Sex Addiction, Compulsive Sexual Behaviour & Intimacy
Sex addiction and compulsive sexual behaviour are not simply about having a high sex drive.
For some people, sexual thoughts, urges or behaviours can become difficult to control and may begin affecting relationships, work, finances, self-esteem, emotional wellbeing and everyday life.
Sometimes the behaviour becomes a way of coping with loneliness, stress, rejection, anxiety, emotional pain, boredom or difficult experiences.
And often, what happens sexually is only part of the story.
There are spaces in between — the thoughts, emotions, needs, wounds, patterns and relationships that exist beneath the behaviour.
S-E-X Therapist – Sex Addiction: The Spaces In Between provides adults with a confidential opportunity to talk openly about concerns surrounding compulsive sexual behaviour and begin exploring what may be happening beneath the surface.
With Dr. Louise Swart, you can begin the conversation without having to have all the answers.

WHAT IS SEX ADDICTION?
Sex addiction is commonly used to describe a pattern in which sexual thoughts, urges or behaviours become persistent, difficult to control and continue despite negative consequences.
This may involve:
- Compulsive pornography use
- Excessive masturbation
- Repeated sexual encounters
- Anonymous or risky sexual encounters
- Excessive use of dating or sexual apps
- Compulsive seeking of sexual stimulation
- Repeated visits to sexual websites or online platforms
- Sexual behaviour used to escape emotional discomfort
- Difficulty stopping a behaviour despite wanting to
- Repeated promises to stop followed by returning to the behaviour
- Sexual behaviour that interferes with relationships or responsibilities
- Persistent sexual thoughts that consume significant time and attention
The important question is not simply how much sex someone has.
The question is whether the behaviour has become difficult to control and is causing distress or disruption in the person's life.
WHEN SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR BECOMES A PROBLEM
You may want to consider talking to a therapist if you find yourself asking:
“Why can't I stop?”
“Why do I keep going back to this?”
“Why do I continue even though I know it is hurting me?”
“Why do I use sex or pornography when I am stressed, lonely or emotionally overwhelmed?”
“Why do I feel ashamed afterwards?”
“Why am I hiding my behaviour from my partner?”
“Why do I keep making promises to myself that I don't keep?”
These questions can be a starting point for understanding the pattern.

THE CYCLE OF COMPULSIVE SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR
For many people, the pattern can become a cycle:
TRIGGER → URGE → BEHAVIOUR → TEMPORARY RELIEF → SHAME / REGRET → PROMISE TO STOP → TRIGGER
Understanding the cycle can be an important first step.
Instead of simply asking:
“How do I stop having sex?”
or
“How do I stop watching pornography?”
we can begin asking:
“What happens inside me immediately before I engage in the behaviour?”
That is where some of the spaces in between begin to reveal themselves.
THE SPACES IN BETWEEN
The sexual behaviour may be visible.
But underneath it there may be:
Loneliness.
Fear.
Rejection.
Stress.
Boredom.
Emotional pain.
Need for connection.
Need for validation.
Low self-worth.
Unresolved experiences.
Difficulty expressing emotions.
Difficulty with intimacy.
A desire to escape.
Understanding these underlying experiences can help create a different relationship with the behaviour.
WHY SEEK THERAPY FOR SEX ADDICTION?
Sexual behaviour can be extremely difficult to discuss.
People may experience embarrassment, guilt, shame or fear of being judged.
You may have kept the behaviour secret for a long time.
You may not even know how to explain what is happening.
Therapy provides an opportunity to begin putting the experience into words.
It can help you:
- Understand your behavioural patterns
- Identify triggers
- Explore what happens emotionally before and after the behaviour
- Understand your relationship with sex and intimacy
- Develop greater self-awareness
- Explore healthier ways of responding to emotional needs
- Improve communication
- Understand the impact on relationships
- Begin rebuilding trust where appropriate
- Develop strategies for managing urges
- Explore boundaries and personal responsibility
- Work towards healthier patterns of intimacy
You don't have to have all the answers.
You simply have to be willing to start the conversation.
WHO IS THIS THERAPY FOR?
INDIVIDUALS

PARTNERS

COUPLES

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
CONFIDENTIAL SPACE
A private environment in which you can discuss personal and sensitive issues.
NON-JUDGMENTAL CONVERSATION
An opportunity to talk about experiences that may be difficult to discuss elsewhere.
EDUCATIONAL APPROACH
Greater understanding of sexual behaviour, compulsive patterns, triggers and intimacy.
PRACTICAL EXPLORATION
A focus on understanding your individual circumstances and identifying possible ways forward.
PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
Exploring your choices, behaviours, triggers and patterns without reducing the conversation to blame or shame.
RESPECT
You remain in control of what you choose to discuss during the session.
THE GOAL IS NOT SHAME
Sexual behaviour can sometimes become surrounded by secrecy and shame.
Shame can make it harder to ask for help.
The purpose of therapy is not to condemn you for your behaviour.
It is to create a space where you can look honestly at what is happening, understand the patterns and begin considering healthier ways forward.
You are more than your behaviour.
And understanding the behaviour is often where meaningful change can begin.

START THE CONVERSATION
Sometimes the behaviour we are most ashamed of is the behaviour we most need to understand.
You don't have to explain everything at once.
You don't have to know why you do what you do.
You don't have to have already figured out how to stop.
You simply need to be willing to begin exploring the spaces in between.
SEX. URGES. COMPULSION. SHAME. INTIMACY. CONNECTION.
There is so much happening beneath the behaviour.
And sometimes the first step towards change is simply having a safe place to talk about it.
