A free-to-attend book launch for a new sci-fi anthology from Newcastle University, themed around DNA data storage.
About this Event

Newcastle University’s EnDROIDS research group are excited to announce the launch of a new sci-fi anthology – “Sequences of Tomorrow” – featuring the top stories from the recent EnDROIDS short story competition on the theme of ‘DNA Data Storage’, alongside beautiful illustrations by artist Irina Petrova Adamatzky.

DNA Data Storage – the practice of preserving data inside synthetic DNA – is developing fast. It offers a long-lasting, environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional data storage, but is often misunderstood or overlooked by the public. These stories seek to engage the public’s imagination, offering diverse visions of a future in which this emerging technology is mainstream.

You are invited to an afternoon of readings of some insightful sci-fi by our contributing authors, and an exploration of the science behind the stories by members of the ENDROIDS research team, at Newcastle City Library. You will also have the chance to buy signed copies of the anthology. Free drinks and nibbles will be served.

What is “Sequences of Tomorrow”?

Sequences of Tomorrow brings together seventeen original science fiction stories exploring the possibilities, consequences and human questions surrounding DNA data storage—an emerging technology that could transform how information is preserved for generations to come.

Created through the EnDROIDS Short Story Sci-Fi Competition, the anthology features the winning and shortlisted stories alongside two specially commissioned works by author Hannah Hoare. From memories preserved across generations to questions of identity, ownership and the ethics of biological information, these stories imagine futures in which data and life become increasingly intertwined.

At times hopeful, unsettling, moving and thought-provoking, the collection explores themes of memory and loss, technological progress, responsibility, privacy and what it means to preserve the things that matter to us.

Featuring original illustrations by Irina Petrova Adamatzky, Sequences of Tomorrow brings science and storytelling together to invite readers to consider not only what future technologies might make possible, but what kind of future we want them to create.
