Semmes was once the "heart" of the Nursery industry in the South. Today, many of our homes here in Semmes sit on land that once held fields of flowers, including our "state" flower, the Camellia. In 1949, local camellia enthusiasts held the first Semmes Camellia Festival to showcase this beautiful flower and involve the community in the celebration. The celebration included participation by our local Semmes School, which hosted the event, and a Camellia pageant which featured an annual reigning King and Queen chosen from the senior class and a court of Camellia Maids and Knights representing each class.Fifty years later, in the early 2000's the Semmes Camellia Festival was revived by a local community group, and over the years since, this annual celebration of our locally beloved camellias has continued, sponsored by local civic groups.
This local tradition will return once again in 2027. The Semmes Camellia Festival is scheduled for January 23, 2027, and it will be held at the site of the original Camellia Festival, Semmes School, or as it's known now, the Boys and Girls Club on Wulff Road. It will be sponsored by the Semmes Women's Club.
This Facebook page was established to provide information leading up to the show and will feature, along the way, bits of historical information pertaining to our rich local history centering around our love of this beautiful state flower.
Stay tuned for further "Semmes Camellia Festival 2027" updates to include festival details, events planned, and participant information, which will be posted in the near future. In the meantime, step back in time and enjoy these pics!
