The Bedouins are an integral part of Jordanian society and have shaped a significant portion of the country’s population. Their main communities are found in the Wadi Rum desert, the region around Petra, and the Dana Valley. Although many have become more settled over time, they continue to preserve their nomadic traditions, renowned hospitality, and rich cultural heritage.
This musical legacy lives on through Ahmad Selawy, a Palestinian-Jordanian multi-instrumentalist, singer, and composer. Raised in Irbid and surrounded by folk music and traditional sounds from an early age, he developed his skills as a self-taught musician, performing at weddings, village celebrations, and informal gatherings. His move to Amman marked a turning point, as the capital’s vibrant music scene broadened his artistic vision while strengthening his commitment to his cultural roots.
Selawy plays the clarinet, double-reed flute, bagpipe, and the mijwiz, a traditional reed instrument with Bedouin origins. Through his music, he revives forgotten songs and builds bridges between generations, bringing together tradition and modernity.
For many years, he has shared a close musical partnership with Mohammad Al-Qattanani “Hamboz,” a composer and virtuoso performer on the saz and oud. Known for his ability to blend tradition with innovation, Hamboz brings remarkable emotional depth to both his original compositions and his interpretations of classical repertoire. Together, Selawy & Hamboz tell the story of the Levant through powerful, contemporary Bedouin sounds, where past and present meet in perfect harmony.
