Join Switchgrass Paper and Friends of the Forest Preserves for an afternoon of creativity, conservation, and time outdoors at Penny Road Pond in Barrington!
Switchgrass Paper artists Aya Nakamura and Megan Diddie will lead a hands-on introduction to western-style papermaking using cotton pulp. Participants will learn the papermaking process and have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of molds and deckles in different sizes, with all materials provided.
After making paper, we’ll head out into the prairie for a hands-on native seed collection activity. Together, we’ll learn about the plants growing around us, collect native seeds, and support ongoing restoration efforts in the Barrington Greenway.
Come make something with your hands, get outside, and help care for the prairie!

Seed Collection
Host: Isabella Stocke
Info: Aspiring plant nerd Isabella and local volunteer stewards will lead a hands-on seed collection activity featuring a few native prairie species. We’ll learn how to identify ripe seed, collect responsibly, and talk about how native seeds support restoration and healthy local ecosystems.
All seed collected will be spread back into local ecosystems for restoration. No seed will be removed from the site or sold. All collection tools and supplies will be provided!
