Mr. Hat proudly presents See What Love Can Do, a Bay Area super-group on the rise celebrating the golden era of the Jerry Garcia Band, when the band leaned hardest into Gospel and soul and turned it into something genuinely transcendent.
This lineup brings the pedigree to match: Grammy winning organist LJ Holoman, Cheryl Rucker of Melvin Seals & JGB, Jay Wilcox of Lovin' Dead, Jerry Saracini of Mars Hotel, Maria Long from the Oakland Gospel Choir, and Liam Hanrahan of Zero. Founder and bandleader Jay Wilcox (lead guitar & vocals) has spent decades honing his craft and even built his own guitar during the pandemic to get the tone just perfect, his love for the material and attention to detail really shines with this project. LJ Holoman has played with Dr. Dre, Fantastic Negrito and Tony! Toni! Tone! and is highly sought-after in the Gospel music community. He is relatively new to the JGB scene, but his unique and mind-blowing playing style has created quite a buzz about this spirited project. A longtime core member of Melvin Seals and JGB, Rucker's vocals harken back to the soul and gospel undercurrent that defined JGB sound during the group's celbrated 1985 to 1995 run. Special guest on the low end Liam Hanrahan shared bass duties with Bobby Vega for Zero alongside Steve Kimmock and Martin Fierro. Jerry Saracini recently relocated to the Bay from Texas, and has become one of the most sought-after drummers in the burgeoning GD scene. Maria Long is dedicated to keeping the tradition of Black Spiritual Music alive in the East Bay, and using the music to promote peace, love and acceptance.
Pat Nevins (Wicked Messengers, Shakey Zimmerman, Grapefruit Ed) is a Bay Area legend in the Grateful Dead scene and we are excited to have him open the show.
The Chapel of the Flowers is a stunning new all-ages venue (NOT a bar!); a 102-year old storybook chapel with high vaulted ceilings, lots of stained glass, and oodles of Bohemian charm and its right across from Ashby BART. There will be a 21+ "social hour" on the patio at setbreak hosted by CBCB Dispensary with free 🌲💨 The show will end in time to take BART home, or there is also a parking lot and plenty of additional parking in the BART parking lot across the street.
Limited reserved seats and discount advance tickets are available now, get your family and friends and join us for an uplifiting evening celebrating the Gospel & Soul Golden Era of JGB.
