The penultimate slam of the Sedona Poetry Slam’s 18th season brings five slams of momentum to a head. With just one slam left after this one the pressure is on for poets chasing a spot in the season-ending lineup as competitors sharpen their strongest three minutes before the finale next month.A poetry slam is a series of high-energy three-minute one-person performances judged by five members of the audience chosen at random. Performance poets come from Phoenix Tucson Prescott and Flagstaff to compete against local poets from Sedona and Cottonwood college poets from Northern Arizona University and youth poets from Verde Valley high schools. All styles are welcome from narrative and hip-hop to political rants and confessional verse.
Poets compete for a $75 grand prize and $25 second-place prize with three original poems each under three minutes. No props costumes or musical accompaniment are permitted. Email [email protected] to sign up in advance or sign up at the door the day of the show. Poets should purchase a ticket in case the roster fills before they arrive.
Prize money is funded in part by Verde Valley poetry supporters Jeanne and Jim Freeland.
