Have you ever been invited to lick your plate indulgently? This might be your chance. Artist Fang Mij will be setting the table for a very special dinner party. Growing up biculturally in a Chinese restaurant in the Netherlands, food has always played a big role in her upbringing. Therefore, she invites you to her table where serving food is an act of care but also an exploration of cultural norms around eating. Absurdity will be celebrated! The artist will serve multiple courses from an experimental menu that she developed together with Malou van Doormaal, accompanied by a soundscape by Lengleng. Be ready for a dinner that unsettles some assumptions.
In a lecture on Sunday (15th), curator Haiko Sleumer will give context about The Dinner Party (1979) by Judy Chicago, to which Fang Mij’s work is a response. She asked: Why is there no food served at this iconic Dinner Party? – according to Chinese culture this is unimaginable. My Dinner Party (if you dare) is therefore the first to serve food. Afterwards, we will watch a movie that connects to Fang Mij’s bicultural upbringing in the Netherlands.

My Dinner Party (if you dare) features eight ceramic plates by Fang Mij with imprints of her own hair that were made during her Light on Labs residency at Cor Unum.
