The SDSU Wind Symphony continues its 2026-2027 season with a program entitled "Unquiet Voices." Featuring music from a diverse array of compositional voices and backgrounds, this is a performance that will embark on an emotional journey in telling the story of America through different musical cultures.
The opening half of the program features music by three winners of the Pulitzer Prize in Music: Joan Tower, Rhiannon Giddens, and Raven Chacon. Joan Tower's "Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman no. 5" champions the achievements of women in our culture while Rhiannon Giddens' "At the Purchaser's Option with variations" tells the story of a mother's dilemma in the antebellum slave trade. Following Andrew Balfour's "Vision Chant," which evokes imagery of Cree legends, the first half closes with a powerful performance of Raven Chacon's "American Ledger no. 1," which presents a creation story of America through the rendering of an unconventional graphic notational score.
The second half of the concert presents more conventional wind band repertoire: Ricardo Lorenz's "El Muro" weaves Latin American dances into an intricate web, while Margaret Bonds' "Spiritual Suite" takes classic Black American spirituals and reinvigorates them with 20th-century popular styles. We close the concert with Omar Thomas' powerful memorial to victims of a 2015 shooting at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina entitled "Of Our New Day Begun."
This performance is free and open to the public, and no ticket is required to attend. Doors will open at 7:00PM with general admission seating. Balcony seating is restricted for this performance. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream of the performance will be available on the YouTube channel of The Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. We hope you'll be able to join us for this incredible evening of music!
