This is a celebration of community, democracy, and the power we hold when we come together. But it’s also a moment to reflect on where our city stands:
We are seeing our city shaped by outside forces, massive corporate interests moving in, and decisions being made that affect our air, our neighborhoods, and our future. Yet too often, our elected officials are not standing up for our communities.
Why?
Because too many of us are being left out of the decision-making process.
In the last Shelby County primary election on May 3, 2022, there were 582,412 registered voters in our county. Out of all those eligible voters, only 64,299 people showed up to vote. That means only about 11% of voters decided the outcome of the election for nearly 600,000 people.
Memphis deserves a democracy where our communities are informed, engaged, and holding leaders accountable at the polls. That’s why the Shelby County Voter Alliance, a coalition of organizations across Memphis, is launching this election cycle together: to educate voters, mobilize our communities, and build the power needed to protect our neighborhoods and our future.
This year alone, Shelby County voters will face three major elections: including local primaries, county races, and state and federal elections. With so many elections happening, it can be easy for voters to feel confused or overwhelmed.
We’re here to break it down, provide resources, and make sure our communities are prepared to participate every step of the way.
So the question is:
Will we remain at 11% turnout for the primary elections, or will we show up and show out? This rally marks the beginning to a year full of civic mobilization. Come connect with neighbors, enjoy a joyful afternoon with your family, and learn how we can strengthen our democracy together.
Let’s celebrate our city and take back our democracy. Will you join us?
