Heartwood Nature Bathing warmly offers a special 5-hour basket weaving workshop
You will learn to weave contemporary sculptural vessels using round rattan reed.
Choose to create a bowl or vase (around 30cm tall). Time permitting, you may make a smaller second piece.
Choose from a selection of premium hand-dyed reeds to create your unique work of art.
No prior experience is needed for this workshop, which will help you cultivate a sense of calm, creativity and connection.
Where?
This small group experience takes place at the Vacant Assembly gallery in West End, inner Brisbane/Meanjin.
The space is wheelchair accessible.
Street parking is available, however please note the West End markets are on Saturdays which makes parking a little trickier. There is a bus stop out the front of Vacant Assembly.

What to expect
This event has a maximum of 12 participants, and is suitable for people 14 years and over.
No prior experience is necessary and all materials are provided. There will be a selection of hand-dyed round rattan reed to choose from (in sizes 2, 3 and 4.)
You will learn skills including:
- Starting a basket with a simple bundled base
- Sculptural techniques (add gaps or 'windows' in the work)
- Pairing, and three-rod waling weaving
- Options for finishing your basket with borders or decorative edging
You can expect to weave one basket or vase in this session (perhaps two!) and you will take home the skills needed to complete larger projects.
Lunch for this workshop is self-catered. Tea, coffee and snacks are provided.
Your Host
Monique Ross is a fibre artist who absolutely loves weaving! She has exhibited at Vacant Assembly Gallery in Brisbane, and is the 2025 Artist in Residence at the Cossack Art Awards in Western Australia. She has been teaching weaving for several years.
As a non-Indigenous weaver, Monique is mindful of ongoing conversations around cultural appropriation and approaches her work with deep respect and care. She acknowledges the rich and enduring weaving traditions of First Nations peoples across Australia and beyond. Her own practice is through a contemporary lens—rooted in diverse craft forms, nature connection, and mindfulness. Monique is clear that she is not an Indigenous artist and does not teach or represent Indigenous cultural practices.
Monique is also a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, who trained with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy. She is the founder of Heartwood Nature Bathing.
Monique has a blue card, up-to-date certifications in Remote and Wilderness Area First Aid, and full public liability insurance. All of the appropriate permits have been secured.
Cancellation policy
Refunds are available for cancellations requested up to 48 hours before the event start time. Please note that the Eventbrite booking fee is non-refundable.
Cancellations made less than 48 hours before the event are not eligible for a refund. This is because of costs already incurred in preparing for the event, including perishable supplies, materials, permits, and venue hire. However, if I am able to re-sell your spot to another participant, a full refund (excluding the Eventbrite fee) will be provided.
If an event is affected by inclement weather, or cancelled by the organiser, a full refund will be issued.
