About this Event
The Volusia County Explore Volusia program invites you to join Environmental Specialist Tommy Nordmann for a one-mile hike at Scrub Oak Preserve. Along the way, we’ll search for the resident Florida scrub jays, the only bird endemic to Florida.
** Important note: Please arrive ON TIME to complete a waiver prior to the start of the hike. Waivers must be completed in full to participate in the program. Waivers can be downloaded at Explore Volusia and completed ahead of time.
** Some map apps and GPS devices will take you to the incorrect location. Use the following link to direct you to Scrub Oak Preserve: Scrub Oak Preserve in Deland, FL United States - Apple Maps
ACTIVITY: This will be a moderate 1-mile hike. Hiking may be difficult for some due to soft, sugar-sand on the trails.
RESERVATIONS: Required. Unless you have a confirmation email, you are not registered.
TICKETS: No printed ticket is necessary.
AGES: All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
ATTIRE: closed-toe shoes, comfortable clothing for the outdoors
** Some of our trails have mud and/or standing water because they are located in wetland ecosystems and because of seasonal rains and high tides. We recommend you bring a pair of waterproof boots in addition to your regular hiking shoes if you don't want your shoes to get wet. Our hike leader will let you know the condition of the trails prior to the start of the hike.
WHAT TO BRING: water, bug spray, sunscreen, and binoculars
FACILITIES: There is a port-a-let on site but no running water.
For more information, contact Tommy Nordmann at [email protected] or (386) 943-7081, ext. 21266.
** Following the successful completion of your registration, you should receive a confirmation email, and two days prior to the program you will receive a reminder email. These emails are sent automatically by Eventbrite. If you do not receive them, please contact Tommy at the email address above.
