Shaped by the progressive and left-leaning ideals of the generation that built independent India, ๐ฅ๐ผ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐ฎ ๐ง๐ต๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ transformed how we understand early India. She looks past kings and dynasties to society, economy, caste, religion and the everyday lives of ordinary people. ๐พ
๐ She has always insisted that history must rest on evidence, not myth. For decades she has stood firmly against the use of the past to divide people along religious lines, and she has argued that Indiaโs history is a story of many communities, exchanges and dissenting voices. ๐๏ธ
๐๏ธ As one of the founding figures of the Centre for Historical Studies at ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐น๐ฎ๐น ๐ก๐ฒ๐ต๐ฟ๐ ๐จ๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐๐, she helped train generations of historians to ask critical questions.
๐ โโ๏ธ She twice declined the ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐บ๐ฎ ๐๐ต๐๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป, one of Indiaโs highest civilian honours, because she believed scholars should stay independent of the state. In 2008 she was awarded the ๐๐น๐๐ด๐ฒ ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ฒ for lifetime achievement in the humanities. ๐

Romila Thapar entered academic history in the 1950s, at a time when very few women did, and went on to become one of its most respected and most debated voices. ๐ช She has faced fierce public attacks for her views, yet she has never stopped defending academic freedom, free thought and the citizenโs right to question those in power. ๐ฅ
๐ฌ Into her nineties, she remains a public intellectual in the truest sense: curious, outspoken and unafraid. ๐
Two small checks before you post. The Padma Bhushan refusals (1992 and 2005) and the Kluge Prize (2008) are well documented, but itโs worth double-checking them against a current source. I also described her as shaped by โprogressive and left-leaningโ ideals rather than calling her a socialist. She has used Marxist methods in her work but has resisted being labelled as a Marxist historian, so this wording is safer if the director or Thaparโs circle sees the post.
๐ฐ๏ธ At ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐-๐ณ๐ผ๐๐ฟ, having lived through much of the making of modern India, ๐ฅ๐ผ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐ฎ ๐ง๐ต๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ stands at an unusual distance from the past she has spent a lifetime studying.
๐ก Filmed at her home in ๐ก๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ต๐ถ, the documentary begins with one simple question:
โ ๐ช๐ต๐ผ ๐ถ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ผ๐ป ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ต๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ต๐ถ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ปโ๐ ๐ป๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ? โ
๐ Moving beyond the authority of her scholarship and the public image built around it, the film explores her ๐น๐ถ๐ณ๐ฒ, ๐บ๐ฒ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐, ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ and ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐๐ฎ๐น ๐ท๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ป๐ฒ๐.
๐ซ What emerges is an intimate portrait of a life still in conversation with its own time.

๐ Through the series, he hopes to go beyond scholarship and public profiles to explore the lives, memories, ideas and intellectual journeys of the people behind some of the most influential historical writing of our time.
