Screening Evening Shadows
Join us for a special in-person screening of Evening Shadows, directed by Sridhar Rangayan, followed by a panel discussion with photographer Matt Mahmood and radio presenter Pablo Sat Bhamra, at the Closing Gala of Unspoken: The UK South Asian Mental Health Film Festival.
Set in a small town in Southern India shaped by tradition and social morality, Evening Shadows follows Kartik, a young gay man who comes out to his mother, Vasudha. His truth turns her world upside down as she struggles with fear, confusion and the pressure of a deeply conservative society. With no one to confide in, Vasudha must also face her dogmatic husband, Damodar, while trying to understand and protect the son she loves.
At its heart, Evening Shadows is a moving story of a mother-son bond and the emotional strength needed to withstand prejudice, patriarchy and harsh realities. Through themes of identity, acceptance, family, isolation and belonging, the film opens an important conversation around LGBTQ+ experiences and mental wellbeing within South Asian communities.
Unspoken: The UK South Asian Mental Health Film Festival is an initiative by Tongues on Fire CIO, in partnership with mental health organisations Psychiatry Research Trust, Concern for Mental Health, and the Centre of Applied Research and Evaluation International Foundation (CAREIF).
