Join Ute Aurand and Robert Beavers in person for a two-day program of screenings and discussion exploring affinities between cinema and architecture through their work.
Partners of twenty years and two of experimental cinema's most distinctive voices, Aurand and Beavers have rarely had their films presented in dialogue. "The Built Metaphor" (Oct. 5) focuses on urban architectural space, ornament and construction, while "At Home" (Oct. 6) explores domestic space and interior life. Each screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.

Filmmaker Bios:
Ute Aurand
Ute Aurand (1957, Frankfurt am Main) is a German experimental filmmaker, curator, and teacher based in Berlin. Working almost exclusively in 16mm since 1980, Aurand is known for intimate, rhythmically edited diary films and portraits of friends, family, and places. She has completed more than 40 films which have been widely exhibited in museums, galleries, and festivals internationally. Beyond her own filmmaking, she has curated influential programs and co-founded the group FilmSamstag (1997–2007) as well as founding the Bolex workshop at the DFFB in 2015.
Robert Beavers
Robert Beavers (1949, Brookline, Massachusetts) is a central figure in avant-garde cinema of the latter half of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st. His 16mm films combine poetic sensitivity with formal precision, balancing sensuality and complexity. His work has been the subject of major retrospectives at the Whitney Museum, Tate Modern, Pacific Film Archive, and the Austrian Filmmuseum, with a recent screening at MoMA New York. In 2024, MIT Press published the first book-length study of his work, Double Vision: The Cinema of Robert Beavers by Rebekah Rutkoff. He lives and works between Berlin and Massachusetts, remaining closely involved in how his films are exhibited and preserved.
Presented by U of T’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, Cinema Studies Institute, and Innis College, in partnership with TIFF. “Aurand / Beavers: Architecture and Dwelling” coincides with "The Sparrow Dream with Robert Beavers" at TIFF Cinematheque on October 7 (tickets on sale October 2).
