A workshop by professional Highland dance teacher Vincent Laine-Michaud and Scottish Country Dance amateur teacher Sonja Virta. We will bridge the gap between the neighbouring techniques and give you a general introduction to both of them. The workshop is aimed at beginners and intermediate dancers, but even advanced participants will learn a thing or two! The room is Akseli-sali on the 2nd floor (next to the lift). Free entry!To bring:
- Shoes: a pair of soft flexible shoes or ghillies. Socks are ok but please note that the floor may be dirty.
- A towel for mopping your brow
- A bottle (or several) of water. You can fill them at the library toilets!
3–4 pm Scottish County Dance steps & technique
The “skip change of step”, “pas de basque”, “strathspey travelling step” and others can become frightening monsters with unholy names when you have to quickly learn both the steps and the choreography. While they can be left out or replaced by walking, the steps are important to getting the energy and the movements right. Workshops dedicated to practicing the steps to various music styles are very rare so we aim at responding to this need with a fun, casual yet informative workshop around the most central Scottish Country Dance steps. We will also give you some historical and social context on these dance techniques.
4–5 pm Highland Dance for beginners
Often wrongly seen as elitist, ballet-spirited and selective, Highland dance is and has always been a popular form of dance stemming from a Scottish Gaelic culture at large, wordly, and definitely practiced by all kinds of people, both socially and for enjoyment in addition to the competitive level. Highland dance is energetic, joyful, a bit crazy and definitely very radiant, and it carries a wealth of history in its various steps and is approachable by anyone with the will to do it. In this sharing of joyful spirit, we propose to you an initiation to Highland dance (Teacher diplomed of NZASND), which is open and reachable by anyone with a wish to try themselves at it.

Infection note: Please stay at home if you have symptoms of cold, flu or such! While there will be less hand contact than in our ordinary workshops, there will likely be some nevertheless. Our dancers include several people who may face serious consequences if they catch a respiratory illness. We also strongly recommend using hand disinfectant or washing your hands just. Hand disinfectant will be provided.
