“The Scientist isn’t just mixing - he’s conducting a sonic symphony.” (Rolling Stone)
“A visionary who turned dials into instruments and studios into galaxies.” (The Guardian)
Hopeton Brown – known worldwide as The Scientist Dubmaster – is hailed as one of the most innovative and influential pioneers in the field of reggae, and more specifically dub. The Scientist began his career in the late 1970s in Kingston (Jamaica) at the iconic studios of that other dub legend: King Tubby. There, he brought a new dimension to the art of mixing: he turned the mixing desk into a living instrument with which sound itself could be reshaped, recomposed and reimagined. With his unmistakable hallmarks – deep basslines, spacious echoes and a hypnotic reverb – The Scientist redefined the dub landscape.
The Scientist collaborated with some of reggae’s most iconic voices, including Barrington Levy, Roots Radics, Johnny Osbourne and Augustus Pablo, whilst continually inspiring new generations in reggae, hip-hop and electronic music. In 2010, The Scientist even ventured into a remix of Lady Gaga’s (featuring Beyoncé) ‘Telephone’.
His groundbreaking albums – *Scientist Wins the World Cup* (1982), *Heavyweight Dub Champion* (1980) and *Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires* (1981) – remain timeless milestones in the genre. It is this last album that The Scientist will perform in its entirety ‘in the round’ – that is to say, in the centre of the venue, surrounded by the audience. With tracks such as ‘Night of The Living Dead’, ‘Your Teeth in My Neck’ and ‘Cry of The Werewolf’, The Scientist clearly played on the horror theme. Fun fact: the album was recorded on Friday the 13th …
