About this Event
Join us on November 7th for a special 50th-anniversary Science Café at the National Arboretum exploring the science of bonsai and penjing!
While bonsai is celebrated as an ancient art form designed to evoke aged, natural landscapes, less attention is given to the underlying biology that makes it possible. Bonsai creation is a delicate collaboration between artist and plant—where pruning, wiring, watering, pot size, and soil composition directly shape the tree’s response.
Come explore the scientific mechanisms at work that transform trees into stunning bonsai at the National Arboretum on November 7th. A special bonsai-themed Science Cafe will feature expert speakers studying different soil properties as well how plants respond to growth in containers. The evening will feature themed cocktails, tasty bites, and illuminating presentations on the mysteries of bonsai science and horticulture.
