Nowadays romantic relationships with AI are a growing part of our culture, but when Her premiered in 2013 they were mere fantasy. Theodore Thromby (Joaquin Phoenix) forms an unexpected relationship with AI OS1 Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), creating a connection that blurs the lines between technology and intimacy.
Spike Jonze’s offbeat romance blends speculative fiction with emotional realism, probing loneliness and the ways in which technology is reshaping human connection. Enhanced by Arcade Fire’s film score and visually striking set and costume design, Her is an emotional rollercoaster that prompts us to reflect on how humans choose to interact.
