SCHOONER, THE SAMES, ERIE CHOIR, SUMMER SET
In 2006, Durham label Pox World Empire released 3x4, a split CD featuring three songs each from The Sames, Schooner, Erie Choir, and Summer Set. Twenty years later, all four bands reunite at Stanczyk’s to mark the anniversary, with The Sames playing their first set since their final show in 2006.
The four bands came from different corners of North Carolina, from Durham and Carrboro to Wilmington, and were part of a connected independent music scene built around shared bills, recordings, and friendships. Each brought a distinct approach to guitar-driven songwriting: The Sames’ angular interplay and sharp lyrics; Schooner’s layered arrangements; Summer Set’s off-center storytelling; and Erie Choir’s worn-in, melancholic sound.
The original CD featured a bit of DIY ingenuity: Summer Set’s Brian Weeks made handmade sleeves with an interactive pull-tab design. Released by Pox World Empire, the label run by The Sames’ Zeno Gill, 3x4 remains a document of a particular moment in North Carolina music.
Schooner, Erie Choir, and Summer Set have continued in various forms over the years. For The Sames, this show marks a return after two decades away. It’s a chance to hear the bands together again and revisit a release you may not have heard yet.
