John Smith: Films in Sheep’s Clothing.

Inspired in his formative years by conceptual art and structural film, John Smith also became fascinated by the immersive power of narrative and the spoken word, forming the foundation for the diverse body of work that he has developed over the past five decades. Often rooted in everyday life and personal experience, Smith’s genre-defying films playfully explore and expose the language of cinema, subverting the perceived boundaries between documentary, fiction, representation and abstraction.

For this talk John Smith will present several short films made over the course of his career, ranging from his iconic student work ‘The Girl Chewing Gum’, which celebrates its 50th birthday this year, to the multi-award winning ‘Being John Smith’ from 2024.
