About this Event
LLS Orchestra — Simona Grossi, conductor
Two of the great narrative works of the Romantic repertoire, side by side.
Schumann — Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54
Jason Stoll, piano (LLS Orchestra Pianist in Residence)
Rimsky-Korsakov — Scheherazade, Op. 35
Tina Jamegarmi, solo violin (LLS Orchestra Associate Concertmaster)
Schumann wrote his only piano concerto for his wife Clara, and it unfolds like a conversation between the two of them — intimate, restless, and finally jubilant. Scheherazade tells the tales of the Thousand and One Nights through a solo violin that returns again and again as the storyteller's voice, weaving through shipwrecks, festivals, and a prince's romance before the sea falls quiet.
The soloists
Tina Jamegarmi began on the santoor at six and took up the violin at ten, going on to study at Iran's School of Music at a time when few women were admitted, and later earning a master's degree in violin performance from the University of Art in Tehran. She has appeared as soloist and concertmaster with the Tehran Symphony Orchestra, Iran's National Orchestra, and the Iran Philharmonic, and she founded the Scheherazade Quartet, an all-female ensemble whose recording won the Musicema Award for best classical album. Now based in Los Angeles, she performs across classical, Middle Eastern, and jazz traditions and has taught at conservatory and university level for more than two decades. Playing the solo part in Scheherazade with an ensemble of that name in her past is, fittingly, a story in itself.
Jason Stoll is a Southern California pianist with degrees from Cal State Northridge, the Juilliard School, and the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He gave the U.S. premiere of Britten's Rondo Concertante and has appeared as concerto soloist with orchestras including the Santa Monica Symphony, the Antelope Valley Symphony, and the Midland-Odessa Symphony. A semi-finalist at the Dublin International Piano Competition and a finalist at the American Paderewski Piano Competition, he teaches piano at Cal State Northridge and Los Angeles Pierce College and is active throughout Los Angeles as a recitalist, chamber musician, and adjudicator.
The orchestra
The LLS Orchestra is a nonprofit orchestra of professionals and volunteers bringing full-scale symphonic music to Los Angeles. Concerts take place in the warm acoustics of Our Mother of Good Counsel in Los Feliz.
The conductor
Simona Grossi is the founder, Music Director, and Principal Conductor of the LLS Orchestra. Born and raised in a small town in Italy, she grew up surrounded by books and music and trained classically in piano at the conservatories of Cosenza and Frosinone and later studied conducting with Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Since founding the orchestra in 2021, she has led it from a handful of players to a full symphonic ensemble of more than 150 musicians, with programs ranging from Tchaikovsky, Bernstein, and Márquez to Prokofiev, Rimsky-Korsakov, and, in the coming season, Mahler and Stravinsky. She conducts with a storyteller's instinct for shape and character, and she is particularly drawn to the narrative repertoire — music that unfolds like a tale — which is exactly what this evening's program is built around.
