Horror has always been about more than monsters, ghosts, and things that go bump in the night. The stories that frighten us can reveal what a culture fears, help us explore difficult subjects from a safe distance, and even give us a way to process our own anxieties. In this interactive class, we’ll explore why horror matters, from its cultural role to the surprising ways scary stories can be therapeutic. We’ll look at what makes horror resonate with readers and why humans keep willingly returning to stories designed to unsettle us.Then we’ll turn theory into something delightfully disturbing.Participants will use what they’ve learned to write their own one-page horror story, with prompts and guidance to help get the ideas flowing. At the end of the class, anyone who wants to can share their story with the group. No horror-writing experience is necessary. Just bring your curiosity, something to write with, and a willingness to get a little weird.
