About this Event

Join us on Saturday 21 February for our first ever SCAN Gathering event.

SCAN Gatherings focus on restorative practice and wellbeing. Artists, arts workers and freelancers need opportunities to connect with others in the sector, contextualise their own practice and engage with others that they perhaps not have the opportunity to encounter in their day to day working.

For this event, we are delighted to partner with St Andrew’s Botanic Garden, a site that celebrates the way that plants shape places and people, working with artists, musicians and community groups to offer new perspectives and make connections. Through their work in conservation, research and engagement, St Andrew’s Botanic Garden aim to be an exemplar for the change we would like to see, supporting innovation in benefit sharing and equitable access.

On the day, and with others, guests will get the opportunity to tour the gardens with Director Harry Watkins and Dr Anne Daffertshofer, Art and Cultural Programmes Curator. Anne will ‘introduce’ the garden and the many thought provoking projects that the SABG develop on site. You will also have the opportunity to hear more about their Treasures of the Deep Exhibition, exploring the histories, ecologies and futures of seaweed in its many forms across time and space. Although anchored in the gardens algal collection, it extends beyond by bringing together specimens with contemporary artworks and projects that explore the complex relationship between seaweed and humans.

We will also be joined by Dr Mark Borthwick, theatre maker and socially engaged artist who works with creative ways to engage the public on environmental issues. Through the medium of storytelling, Mark will help us to connect with objects that we feel drawn to and pick up during our tour of the garden, coming together to tell our own stories of these objects, looking at the medium of storytelling as a tool for connection, shared experience and change.

A light lunch and refreshments will be provided.

There is a ramp into the visitor centre and gift shop, which also has an accessible toilet.

There is a designated accessible parking space available in the garden.

A wheelchair is available for visitors to borrow. Do let us know in advance if you would like to reserve this.

We have a small budget available to support SCAN members with travel costs. Please contact us on [email protected] before Monday 16th Feb to apply and we will let you know if we can help you with your request.
