Scalable models for teacher professional development

Quality teaching is one of the most important contributors to improved learning outcomes, yet many education systems face challenges in providing teacher professional development that is effective, equitable, context-responsive and scalable. Teachers often work in complex environments where professional development opportunities may be limited, fragmented, inflexible, insufficiently aligned with curriculum or policy priorities, or difficult to sustain at system level.

The British Council’s recent report, Scalable models for teacher professional development: Insights from the British Council, brings together global evidence and practical implementation experience from across the British Council’s teacher professional development portfolio. Drawing on a review of the literature, and featuring in-depth spotlight studies from Armenia, Colombia, Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa, the report explores how different models of teacher professional development can support improved teaching and learning at scale. The session will introduce the report, highlight the evidence, present the ‘Key elements of quality teacher professional development’ conceptual framework and provide practical insights that can inform the design, delivery and scaling of teacher professional development initiatives.
