Summary: How do computers do math? How do computer actually work?
In this hands-on class, students will explore the basic ideas that make computers work by building a simple working computer from scratch. We’ll start with a short journey through the history of electronic computing—from early switches and relays to vacuum tubes, transistors, and the tiny circuits inside modern computers.
Along the way, students will learn how computers use just two states, ON and OFF, or 1 and 0 to represent information and perform calculations. We’ll explore simple logic gates and see how combining them allows a computer to make decisions and do math.
Then we’ll put those ideas into practice. Using simple electronic components such as switches, transistors, resistors, LEDs, and wires, students will build and connect their own logic circuits to create a working binary calculator capable of adding numbers.
No previous electronics, programming, or computer experience is required. The goal is to take something that can seem complicated and mysterious, a computer, and build it from the ground up so you can actually see how it works.
This course requires an enrollment of at least 3 participants.
