Join us to analyze the molecule make-up behind common foods!About this Event
Explore the science behind the foods and drinks we consume! In this hands-on lab, participants will investigate the biological macromolecules found in common foods, including sugars, proteins, and fats. We’ll bring samples of high-sugar soda, macerated fruit, eggs, and other common foods to measure their sugar and protein content.
In this session, participants will:
- use a spectrophotometer to measure protein concentration in different foods using a copper sulfate (CuSO₄)-based assay;
- apply Lugol’s solution to test foods for the presence of starch;
- compare the nutritional content of different foods;
- explore how much sugar we may actually be consuming and which foods provide the most protein.
Ages 14-adult, adult chaperone required for participants under 15. Chaperones must purchase their own ticket and fully participate in all program activities.
