About this Event

Sasha Galitsky: “Let’s Paint the Deer”
[EN] Sasha (Alexander) Galitsky is an artist, sculptor, writer and founder of the Israeli non-profit organisation “Baobab — Support Through Creativity”. For many years, he has explored how creativity helps people cope with ageing, loneliness, loss and life’s upheavals.
At the heart of this event is his book "Let’s Paint the Deer", which grew out of his many years of working with older people. These are stories about old age without the usual condescension or pity. About people who continue to love, joke, argue, dream and surprise us. About how much life remains within a person, regardless of how many years they have lived. Galitsky tells these stories with humour, tenderness and a remarkable eye for detail.
The same philosophy gave rise to Baobab, the organisation Sasha founded in Israel. Here, people ranging from teenagers to those in advanced old age practise woodcarving and wooden sculpture. But the most important part of these gatherings is not the wooden figures. It is the opportunity to feel capable of creating something with one’s own hands again, to gain confidence, and to find human connection and support.
After 7 October 2023, Baobab became especially important for people who had experienced evacuation, the loss of their homes, loved ones and familiar ways of life. Today, the organisation works in dozens of communities across Israel, helping people rebuild their inner sense of stability through creativity.
This meeting with Sasha Galitsky is a conversation about old age and youth, about creativity as a way to survive, about human dignity, and about why it is never too late to start something new.
The event will be held in Russian.
