About this Event
A note from the Artistic Directors, Kemora Manning and Alexis Amey:
For ten years, Bloom has represented a space where York Dance students could further explore their choreographic interests beyond the confines of the dance department. Fully run and managed by students, Bloom allows emerging choreographers to make and present mid-length work and experience and learn all the components that go into producing work independently. Our aim is to build connections between the emerging artists who have been hand-selected to showcase their work and established artists within the greater community. It is our hope that both choreographers and dancers who participate in Bloom have a deeper understanding of the Toronto arts community, arts outreach, and the importance of supporting local, emerging artists. As we’ve reached a milestone year, both in number and in significance– its's our tenth anniversary and we are the first ever Black AD’s–the theme for this year’s showcase is Sankofa: A Tale of Journeys.
What does ‘Sankofa’ mean?
In the West African tradition, “sankofa” is an Adinkra symbol that means “go back and get it.” The symbol is typically a bird reaching back or a heart with curved, endless, edges. Sankofa is about honouring our histories to inform our present and future, Bloom 2026 is looking for any and all works that honour individual and collective histories and explore the broader concept of journeys and futures.
