This is going to be a VERY different kind of Monday Night Ride.This week, Sanford Bicycle Club is celebrating the wild, colorful and wonderfully over-the-top world of Mexican Lucha Libre!
If you’re not familiar with it, Lucha Libre is Mexico’s legendary style of professional wrestling, famous for its colorful masks, larger-than-life characters, acrobatic moves and dramatic battles between heroes and villains. The masked wrestlers, known as luchadores, have become genuine icons of Mexican popular culture.
Naturally, we looked at this rich cultural tradition and thought:
“We should probably involve bicycles.” 🚲
So here’s the plan.
We’ll roll out from Dees Brothers Brewery and make our way along the RiverWalk toward Lake Monroe Wayside Park.
Upon arrival, things get serious.
VERY serious.
Everyone will be divided into teams and issued a traditional luchador mask. 🤼♂️
Then…
THE TOURNAMENT BEGINS.
Rider vs. rider.
Luchador vs. luchador.
Friendships will be tested.
Alliances will crumble.
There may be flying elbows.
There may be dramatic entrances.
Someone may mysteriously produce a folding chair. 🪑
Each match will be a single-elimination showdown, with the winner advancing through the bracket until only TWO Sanford Bicycle Club luchadores remain.
Those final competitors will enter the ring for one last epic battle.
And when the dust settles, one rider will stand victorious and be crowned:
🏆 THE SANFORD BICYCLE CLUB LUCHA RIDE CHAMPION! 🏆
The champion will receive fame.
Glory.
The respect of their fellow riders.
And absolutely no cash prize whatsoever.
Afterward, assuming everyone is still ambulatory, we’ll climb back aboard our bicycles and cruise down the RiverWalk to Dees Brothers Brewery, where we’ll celebrate victory, defeat and questionable decision-making with some cold cervezas. 🍺🇲🇽

We are, of course, doing NONE OF THIS. 😂
There will be no wrestling.
There will be no tournament.
There will be no flying elbows.
There will be no folding chairs.
And Sanford Bicycle Club’s legal department, which currently consists of absolutely nobody, would like to keep it that way.
We’re just going for a fun, casual bike ride inspired by the colorful world of Lucha Libre.
So relax.
You do not need to know how to wrestle.
You do not need health insurance specifically covering a moonsault.
And you definitely do not need to defeat three masked strangers at Wayside Park to ride home with us.
Just bring your bike, your sense of humor and maybe a luchador mask if you’ve got one.
Fun. Casual. Social. Sometimes a little weird.
This one definitely qualifies. 🤼♂️🚲🇲🇽
